A Story is Like a Menu?

A Story is Like a Menu?

You've worked all day, cooked dinner, and now you get to do more work! YUCK! Right? After a day of school, kids don't  want to do more work either. Home is NOT the classroom where it's filled with quiet and the teacher nearby for help.

 So make it a time of choice!

*Create a space of quiet within a tent

*Work UNDER the table

*Kids can create their own "office"

*Have a chart of assignments to mark off, so they can see what they have gotten done and feel a sense of accomplishment

*Have a timer for them to set reasonable expectations of how long it should take to complete their work

*Multiple subjects? Give a brain-break between subjects

A Story is Like a Menu?

When starting a new story, treat it like a menu at a new restaurant! You don't just glance at the menu. You look at pictures of the foods offered;

decipher the names of dishes;

 read the ingredients to understand what's in them;

re-read items as you begin to chose;

and then decide what to order.

Taking time to really understand everything is the key to ordering something delicious that you really want!

It's the same with reading a new story!

Take your time!

Think about the title;

look at the pictures;

find the names of characters;

read the story;

let yourself "see" the story like a movie in your head;

then read it again, so you can retell it to someone else.

Then you move on to questions and make your choices.

Bon Appetit!
